Becoming an Artist: Yoko Ono | Tate Kids

Back when Yoko Ono first met John Lennon during his visit to her solo exhibition at the Indica Gallery in London in 1966, women were still struggling to be recognized for their own artistic talents. After all, the considerable likes of Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning and Jo Hopper had all been relegated to working in the shadows of their more famous but notably volatile husbands: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Edward Hopper, respectively.

To be fair, no woman could have possibly hoped to become involved in a romantic relationship with a member of The Beatles at that time and not have their life unmercifully scrutinized by a scandal-loving press. But the media, and even moreso the fans, were especially cruel to Yoko...even eventually blaming her for the breakup of the band - which was in truth actually the result of years of infighting amongst the Fab Four, along with the stresses of the monumental fame they had achieved and struggled with every day. In fact, John and Yoko's marriage, for all its ups and downs, was characterized by a deep devotion to one another.

Lennon was tragically killed by an assassin outside their New York City home in December of 1980. But Yoko would channel her profound grief into her art, ultimately becoming one of the most celebrated figures of the contemporary art world; and at 93 years old, she is still as creatively vital as she has ever been.

Inextricably linked with her home city of New York for most of her adult life, she will at last be honored with her first major Los Angeles solo exhibition, 'Yoko Ono: 'Music of the Mind'. which opens at The Broad on Saturday, May 23. In honor of this momentous occasion, we revisit this wonderfully enlightening 2024 'Becoming as Artist' video, part of an ongoing Tate Kids series, produced by the iconic London museum of the same name, and co-sponsored by fashion brand UNIQLO.

Above all, it should inspire young people to find their own unique creative voice, and follow it no matter what anyone else says or thinks.
